A kidney tree

A couple of years ago, I drew a silly little ‘kidney tree’ to illustrate a story about my kidneys, Bob and Dave. It humoured me, but I didn’t think that anyone else would think much of it. It was, after all, just a silly little drawing.

Then, during kidney awareness month, I Tweeted the picture with a little caption about kidneys not actually growing on trees. I didn’t think anything of it; I just thought I’d participate in the #endPKD trend. I certainly didn’t think it would make an impact; after all, I’m not exactly a major player in the world of Twitter. (Or a major player in any world, really.)

But then someone from the UK-based PKD Charity got in touch to ask if it was my own art and if they could use it for cards or other fundraising items. And as PKD is a cause dear to my heart (dear to my kidneys?) I couldn’t say no. Plus that, there’s an ego boost to knowing that someone wants your artwork!

And so, they’ve taken my silly little drawing and they’ve slapped it onto some canvas bags. And they’re looking at doing other things with it, too.

I’m really excited and extremely humbled that someone likes my drawing so much that they want to use it as a fundraising tool. I mean, I know my family and friends always say they like my swirls and other drawings, but it’s a little more validating when a perfect stranger likes them enough to get in touch about using them!

So, does this make me a semi-professional artist? (Enter swelled ego here!)

  1. I love the look of those tote bags. Could you tell me where I can buy one? I couldn’t find them on the web site.

Be sure to let us know what else they use the kidney tree for, too.
