We’ll be back!

Way back in March 2002 my bestest friend ever whom I’ve known for, like, ever and ever came to visit me in Scotland. And she totally hated it. She’d be the first to tell you that she doesn’t travel well and those darn people in Scotland couldn’t even speak English.

But it wasn’t all bad. No, she loved the Chinese food and the Pringles. And she really enjoyed Stirling. And she really loved our tour of Inverness and Loch Ness. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that the day we went to Loch Ness was the best day of the entire visit.*

Anyhow, it won’t be long now and we’ll be back along the shores of Nessie’s watery home as we run the Loch Ness Marathon together (with other great friends, too!) in October.

So to celebrate that fact, here’s a pretty picture that I took of Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness back on that first visit.
Yay!

* Actually, maybe the best day was the day after she met Paul. They got on so well at dinner that they made plans for us all to go to the Star Wars exhibit the next day. My best friend and boyfriend were in geek heaven!

  1. I have this romantic ideal in my head about Scotland. So it’s hard for me to imagine anyone not liking it. Granted, I have never been there. But she obviously liked the most important thing about it (Paul).

  2. I think the deal with my friend is that 1) she doesn’t travel well and is out of sorts the moment she’s in unfamiliar territory (a trip to New York would have thrown her for a loop, too) and 2) she expected it to be a little more like America than it was–which is a common thing when people travel to other English-speaking nations. And then you throw some jet-lag in on the situation…
This time, she’ll do better because 1) she’s not planning to do the tourist thing and 2) she knows what to expect.

  3. I know I probably sound like a broken record, but she really should be given the opportunity to see Linlithgow on this trip, time permitting. And, I’m glad she enjoyed Stirling. I loved it on our visit!

    1. She may like that! I’m sure we’ll manage to see a few sites when she’s there. (And I promise that I’ll take you to Linlithgow every time you visit me in Scotland. I’d be a bad daughter otherwise!)
